Strength Training for All of Us Over Fifty

Scientific research has concluded that strength training is good for older adults. The benefits include: more efficient immune system, increased bone mass (which means stronger bones), increased muscular strength, reduced body fat, reduced resting blood pressure and improved blood sugar levels...plus you look better.

It's a big advantage to be able to lift relatively heavy objects from a shelf without dislocating a shoulder or pick up a heavy bag of groceries without hurting your back. Many everyday routine activities, such as going up and down stairs or simply getting in and out of a vehicle, can be done easier with stronger muscles and better balance. Strength training makes it all easier.

It is well documented that persons over fifty and even into their nineties have shown muscular strength increases and noticeable health improvement due to regular sessions of resistance training.

My experience with weight training began in 1970.  Shortly after arriving in San Francisco I  joined Alex’s Sports Palace on 24th and Mission. The owner, Jim Schmitz, a three time U.S. weight lifting coach, introduced me to the basic concepts of weight training which I still practice to this day. During that same period, I was trained by and trained with Charles Francilette, championship bodybuilder and Mr. San Francisco, Mr. Golden West and Mr. California.  Charles Francilette widened my training spectrum and increased my knowledge of individual muscle development, advanced techniques and the various nuances of specific targeted exercises. For over forty years I have trained without significant interruption of a four to six day a week training schedule.

After retiring from UCSF as an administrative analyst in 2009, I became a certified personal trainer and have since developed a system of progressive overload specifically focused on the variable needs of older adults. Being an older adult myself I am sensitive to and very much aware of the limitations and challenges of the human skeleton-muscular system due to aging. Chronic asthma and arthritis are also within my personal range of experience. My training system is based on the reality that as we age, all our muscles are continually weakening. My approach to this indignity is to work each muscle group and individual muscles on a rotating basis so that no muscle is ignored and allow to fall behind the others. Mobility exercises and stretching is incorporated with free weights in weekly progressions which are individually designed and monitored to facilitate a gradually strengthened body.
